• About this project

by George Moorey, composer and music producer

This is a music project inspired by the City of Gloucester where I have lived for two decades. It has been funded by Arts Council England, using money from the National Lottery.

The map, by Gloucester based illustrator Holly Mae Gooch, displays 8 important historic buildings in the city centre where local musicians, artists, poets, songwriters and singers met for 8 different one off sessions to create, record and film new original songs.

The songs are all inspired by and based on some aspect of Gloucester's cultural heritage. It has been my intention to bring the themes of each song to life through music and to present them in the form of a trail around which you can take a short walk visiting each location where they were recorded along the way.

Each of the songs are presented below in a suggested order for the trail beginning at Gloucester's Tourist Information Centre where (from 5 September 2018) you can pick up a printed map and free CD.

The project will officially be launched at 7pm on Wednesday 5 September 2018 as part of the City Voices programme at the Gloucester History Festival 2018 with a screening event at Gloucester Guildhall. Tickets are free and available to book online.

Every Monday beginning on 23 July 2018 I will publish the film for each song together with the story of how it was inspired with detailed notes about the creative process and the artists involved.

Æthelflæd, recorded and filmed at St Michael's Tower can be watched now as it was released on Friday 8 June 2018 as part of the Aetheflaed 2018 week.
