I learned to play the piano as a child. I was a good player, but hopeless at sight reading. I passed Grade 5 practical and theory at the age of 14 but gave up lessons with a teacher shortly afterwards. I was also bored by learning Mozart and music that I wasn’t interested in. Around the same...
I like working in squares, I find them pleasing. Sitting in that cool, ancient space made me think of creating 8 'tiles' - one for each space. I wandered around, exchanged a few words here and there with the other artists and musicians and soaked up the atmosphere. I sat in a pew as it happened...
I daydream a lot. In past years I’ve spent long periods of time dormant artistically, but there are always ideas milling around waiting for an opportunity to take root and become reality. Once they do I make stuff happen. My singer/songwriter/vicar friend Dan Pierce, who I made music with for a...

  • About this project

by George Moorey, composer and music producer

This is a music project inspired by the City of Gloucester where I have lived for two decades and is funded by Arts Council England, using money from the National Lottery.

There are 8 historic spaces in the city of Gloucester that I have chosen to bring friends to so that we can make music and get creative together. These are:

    • St Mary De Crypt Church, Southgate
    • St Michael's Tower, The Cross
    • Gloucester Guildhall, Eastgate
    • St John's Methodist Church, Northgate
    • Blackfriars
    • The Chapterhouse in Gloucester Cathedral
    • St Nicholas Church, Westgate
    • St Mary De Lode, Archdeacon Street

Some of the music will be instrumental others will be songs or poetry set to music. The lyrical themes coincide with three significant anniversaries for the city. 2018 will mark the 1000th year since the death of Æthelflæd, the 365th year since the Siege of Gloucester and the 100th year since the end of World War I.

Recordings and films will be published together as an online tourist trail around the city centre for residents and visitors during Autumn 2018. There will be a limited run CD which will be available for free along with project artwork and a trail map from city centre outlets. There will also be opportunities for producers to obtain audio samples in order to remix and reinterpret the pieces throughout 2017 and 2018.

I love the music of Olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, The National, Duke Special, Sufjan Stevens and The Unthanks. My work is influenced and inspired by these artists. This project marks the re-launch of my practice as a songwriter, composer and music producer. For more details on me and my practice please click here to visit my personal website.
